The Palace of Illusions by Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni Summary

The Palace of Illusions is a retelling of the Mahabharata, an ancient Hindu epic. The story is told through the eyes of Panchaali, a princess who was born from fire. Dhri, her brother, was also born in this manner. They live in a universe where supernatural creatures and magic are everyday occurrences. Panchaali grows up in King Drupad’s palace, where her father seeks vengeance on his foe, Drona. When Panchaali was a child, the sage Vyasa predicted that she would grow up to be a great and powerful queen with five husbands. Vyasa, on the other hand, claims that Panchaali would bring enormous disaster to her country. The god Krishna serves as a counselor and confidant to Panchaali throughout his life.

When Panchaali reaches marriageable age, King Drupad holds a competition to find her a husband. The contest’s archery test is initially passed by Karna, a famous warrior, but Panchaali humiliates him by inquiring who his parents are. Despite the fact that he is unable to answer her query, she has love feelings for him. Karna is ashamed and goes away. Arjun, a Pandava prince, enters the fray and wins the tournament. Panchaali visits Arjun’s relatives in India. Kunti, Panchaali’s mother, insists that Panchaali marry the four remaining Pandava brothers. After their cousin Duryodhan attempted to kill them in a fire, the Pandavas withdrew into hiding.

King Bheeshma divides the Pandava brothers’ kingdom between the Pandavas and the Kauravas, commanded by Duryodhan, after Panchaali marries the Pandava brothers. The Pandavas establish Indra Prastha as a flourishing city and settle in the Palace of Illusions, a wonderful structure that Panchaali comes to adore. Duryodhan falls into a pool during a visit, and Panchaali’s servants mock him, humiliating him. Yudhisthir, the Pandavas’ oldest son, stakes the Pandavas’ palace and freedom in a game of dice the next time they visit Duryodhan. As a result, Duryodhan inherits the Palace of Illusions, while Panchaali and her husband are exiled for 12 years to the woods. Panchaali’s single goal while her exile is vengeance.

The Pandavas go into hiding in a neighboring palace after 12 years of exile. Panchaali, dressed as a maid, rejects Prince Keechak’s approaches and threats to rape her. Keechak is assassinated by Panchaali and her husband, Bheem. The Great War breaks out between the Pandavas and the Kauravas as a result of this brutality. Many people close to Panchaali are killed in the fight, including Drupad, Dhri, and Karna. Panchaali’s husbands decide that it is time for them to die and pass to the afterlife after hearing of Krishna’s death soon after the fight. In the afterlife, Panchaali is reunited with Karna.
